How do teachers mark their students?

Do teacher’s give marks based on the actual work, or by how much they like the student? What's your experience?

Thanks to Mrs. McCormick-Murta's Grade 12 ELA 40S Trans class for this post idea.

  1. Well in my experience I have observed that in some classes teachers do mark on how much they like a person. Because me and a friend did the same assinment (I always got better marks then him) and I put my name on his he put his name on mine and I still got a better mark. So some teachers do mark on the student not the actual work. But not all teachers do that. I think that it is horrible that teacher do actually mark students on the student and not the work.

  3. Do teachers give marks based on the actual work or by how much they like the student is a good question. In my opinion it depends. As a student that sits in class observing, I can see that it depends on the teacher. It seems like if a student is more involved in the class and does their work the teacher will assume that they did their work at high quality and mark slacker, but if the student seems to just listen and do their work silently they have to look at it and actually mark it. But if the student fools around and is not on the teachers’ good side, they may mark that person harder.
I for one have experienced a teacher that looked at my work and graded me lower then what I deserved. I am a good student and do my work and listen but for some other reason that teacher didn’t seem to like me. My overall grade hit me, and I thought to myself that that mark didn’t look right to me with the effort I put into that class. I went to my teacher and asked how I got that mark and I fought. The teacher looked over my work and later then said to me “Looks like I marked you a bit harsh because I just skimmed it over”, that teacher remarked my assignment and gave me the mark I deserved.
Overall I think it depends on the teacher, some teachers are fair and some pick favourites but students just have to fight if they believe they did better. Be responsible, respectful and understanding. Never back talk but ask questions. The difference between teachers is amazing, just be cautious.

  4. I think that not all teachers are honest with students, but I would say most of them are. I think it doesn’t depend on the student if they are a “favourite student” by a teacher or a “pet”but it depends on how the student works in their class. I think techers give marks based on what the student has done on assignments and tests. But I would agree in some cases that if students misbehave in their class, their mark can be affected. Some students that are acting like fools in their class or act way over crazy and rude and childish in the class and if a teacher doesn’t like their behaviour, they might give them a low mark.I know that there are a lot of students in this school that act like that in a class and some teachers don’t like it and some don’t mind. I personaly don’t have any experiances or closness with teachers, I am usualy a quiet person, because I don’t like talking in front of class. However teachers might have favourite students and like them very much and still give them a low, average or a higher mark.

  5. When I was thinking about this are teachers are pretty good about not picking their favorite students and giving them better marks. When I thought more about it though the teachers may be marking fairly but they definitely are not treating the student fairly on how they allow them to act in class. I have lost count for the amount of time that I have seen people use their lighters and light their shoes on fire, paper, and other people and have the teacher look right at them and do nothing about it. There are also the people who are constantly late for the class and the teacher never puts any disciplinary action on them in the least to make them show up for class on time. The dumb thing is that the people who do follow the rules seem to be in those teachers hit list books or can never do anything right. Another thing I have noticed about those students getting away with those things is they also get away with getting in the school work late. I have seen these teachers let them hand it in when they get it done and yet I always get my homework done on time and it makes me feel like why I should be trying so hard if it makes no difference in the end for my overall mark in that class. I just feel that if teachers are going to mark fairly like they are then they should have a expectation for these high school students as well because the stunts they are pulling now are going to cause them trouble in there later lives.

  6. Not all teachers. I feel that SOME teachers give marks fairly to work quality only. But we are ALL born bias. Teachers are not immune to being prejudice. Some teachers know that student and mark them on their good, bad or strange attitude. Some teachers know the kids on a more personal (not sexual) level and mark on the fact that they had a bad day. The marks should be made from the quality of work, how much time spent and other exceptions should be brought up with the teacher, by the student. Teachers who do “favor” kids because they know them better should not take it upon themselves to mark them harder or easier.
I also personally have a problem with marked ‘opinionated’ questions because not one person on their planet can tell me or anyone else that their opinion is wrong. Maybe what enforces them to have such an opinion maybe false facts or something but if that is someone’s opinion no one can mark you down.
Teachers who teach math have a harder time doing this because if the answer is -6 and they put -6 then it’s hard to mark them wrong. But math teachers can be much more picky about ($) signs and things such as rounding up or down to some students. There will never be completely fair teachers unless they never seen us at all. If we were taught by a computer and did work and mailed it in… that would be the only way to avoid any bias treatment from teachers… but this would cause a whole set of new problems as well. Problems such as not having any help if its needed, different learning styles, what we know as a ‘normal’ school experience and much more would be created. So we will just have to such up to teachers like we have been in order to do the best we can.

  7. How Do Teachers mark their students?
    Brandi Crones-
I think teachers mark their students based on their academic skills. I don’t think they particularly FAVOR students, but they do recognize when a student tries really hard, and doesn’t waste all their class time fooling around, no one would encourage that. I personally have experienced a teachers encouragement for the fact that I may not have all the best marks in the school, I may not even be to class on time due to whatever the fact may be, but this teacher in particular notices that I do try my very best when working on anything, and I don’t waste time about it .The assignment may not even be in on time, but he understands that I put a good effort into my work to make up for the tardiness. I appreciate that he gives me some slack when it comes to my school work because it makes it a lot easier on me to not have to worry about 50 different deadlines, while stressing about home & work, and whatever else is on my plate that week. I do think that some students are favored for their personalities as well, if you’re friendly a teacher is obviously going to give you credit for not being disrespectful and disrupting. I don’t think students should be marked particularly on assignments , but on attendance and classroom edict as well , hopefully the school boards will realize eventually that not all students are able to handle writing tests, or being in certain environments due to everyone having a different learning ability.

  9. teachers think that the students try their hardest on most of the assignments but really all they do when weekend homework is assigned, is they don't do s**t for the whole weekend and then just do it in 30-60 minutes on sunday night, well thats what i do..

  10. I find it extremely unfair the way some teachers mark thier assignments. I have a teacher who marks my assignments based on what other kids in my class get. For example in LA we made commercials and I got marked lower then someone else simply becuase my teacher thought thiers was better, his marking didn't even follow the rubric he gave us. I have also had teachers who take marks off for getting the right answer in math but not doing it that teachers specific way. Everyone solves math problems different ways so I find it extremely unfair that this teacher takes marks off for not doing it "his way" even though there's more then one way to do things. Another thing I don't like is when teachers make project worth like only 4 marks? I find that really stupid because say you did one thing wrong and get a 3.. that's onl y 75% and having a few 3 outta 4 can really kill your mark.
